Research projects currently in progress within the region include:
Prostate Cancer
- ProtecT. A multicentre trial, funded by NHS R&D, to screen 125,000 men for prostate cancer with follow-up for 10 to 15 years
- PROMPT. A collaborative research program looking at genomic studies of prostate cancer to investigate new treatments for men with relapsing disease
- PRO4. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of oral sodium clodronate in locally-advanced prostate cancer
- PRO5. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of adjuvant sodium clodronate in patients commencing or responding to hormone therapy for metastatic prostate cancer
- PRO7. A randomized trial of hormone therapy plus radical radiotherapy versus hormone therapy alone in non-metastatic prostate cancer
Urothelial Cancer
- MCM5. Translational studies of MCM5 in bladder and prostate cancer (with Gareth Williams)
- ODMIT C. A multicentre, prospective, randomized study of the value of a single dose of intravesical Mitomycin in preventing the development of bladder tumours following nephroureterectomy for transitional cell carcinoma of the upper urinary tract
- Tissue surplus to diagnostic requirements is being banked for molecular & genetic studies of urological malignancy. In particular, using array comparative genomic hybridization techniques, our intention is to:
- identify differences in DNA copy number & RNA expression
- evaluate the role of lymphovascular invasion, lymphangiogenesis & angiogenesis
- characterize the prognostic features of cancer related to disease severity & dissemination
Overactive Bladder
- CDAR328A2409. A 12 week, randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled, parallel group, multicentre study to evaluate the efficacy, safety and tolerability of a compound in patients aged >65 years with overactive bladder
- A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel group of cannabis-based medicine extract (CBME) in patients suffering detrusor overactivity associated with multiple sclerosis
Stress Incontinence
- The safety and effectiveness of Duloxetin compared with placebo and its long-term safety and efficacy in predominant stress incontinence
Audit
Individual units are responsible for their own audits and, at present, no regional audits are ongoing. However, trainees of all grades are encouraged to present their individual audits at the annual East Anglian Urologists' Meeting held in December each year.
