| The urology units in the Irish Republic are spread throughout the country but there is a single, central training scheme. Eight Specialist Registrars (SpRs) are placed in Dublin, Galway, Cork and Limerick. A 2-year residency programme also allows non-urological Registrars to gain experience in the urology units and it is generally assumed that these Registrars will go on to participate in the SpR programme. |

Galway University Hospitals
Galway is a city of approximately 100,000 people on the west coast of Ireland. The National University of Ireland, Galway was originally founded in the 19th century and has had a medical school since its inception.
Galway is served by three airports, a local airport that flies directly to London Luton, an international airport at Shannon (one hour away) and Dublin airport which, with a new motorway link, is now only two hours away.
University College Hospital Galway is located in the centre of the town, close to the university. It has a large Urology Department with five consultants. The emphasis is on oncology with approximately 100 radical prostatectomies (laparoscopic and open), 50 to 60 nephrectomies (open and laparoscopic) and 20 to 30 cystectomies performed each year.
We also perform a large volume of PCNL, ureteroscopy,TURP and TURBT each year. We cover a catchment of 1,000,000 people with the associated emergency requirements for stones, haematuria etc. We run a Rapid Access Prostate Clinic, provide a service for female stress incontinence, offer flexible ureteroscopy and perform green light laser prostatectomy as well as TURP.
We normally have a complement of five registrars; two from the All-Ireland Specialist Registrar Programme and three other registrars on a resident basis. Applications for these posts can be made directly to the hospital or to Mr Kilian Walsh, Consultant Urological Surgeon. We also plan to create an oncology/laparoscopic fellowship position during 2011 and are awaiting approval from the Royal College of Surgeons for its ratification. We welcome applications from the United Kingdom throughout Europe and worldwide to work within the unit for a year or potentially to gain access to the All-Ireland Specialist Registrar Programme.
This is a young and dynamic department with a large clinical throughput. We run a research programme in conjunction with the Professor of Surgery, Michael Kerin. We are currently looking at micro-RNA studies in prostate cancer and kidney cancer. We are involved in a number of clinical trials with sponsorship from the MRC, from industry and from ICORG; we hope to present and publish on a more frequent basis in the years to come.

Tallaght Hospital, Dublin
The Urology Department in Tallaght (AMNCH) was established when the Meath Urology Department closed and moved to a new hospital in 1998. AMNCH is a teaching hospital for Trinity College Dublin. The department is one of the busiest in the country and is situated to the west of Dublin city, just off the M50; it serves the west of Dublin and a large portion of the midlands.
There are four Consultants working in the department, some of whom also have sessions in St James's Hospital and in the National Rehabilitation Hospital. There are five Registrar posts, one SHO post and two intern posts.
The department has an established record of uro-oncology, female urology, laparoscopic urology and endourology. We have the only fixed-site lithotripter in a public hospital in the Republic of Ireland..
Inpatients are based in a dedicated urology ward with daily access to day-ward facilities. There are two dedicated urology theatres, which run five days per week, and a dedicated Urology outpatient department, with endoscopy facilities, TRUS, urodynamics and ESWL.
There are regular MDT, radiology, audit, research, teaching and journal club meetings.
