The Sheffield Teaching Hospital Foundation Trust provides over 900,000 appointments and operations every year as well as providing basic science, clinical education and research facilities for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Department of Urology is the cancer centre for North Trent. Northern General HospitalThe Northern General Hospital, Sheffield contains the Princess Royal Spinal Injuries Centre, which is the second largest and oldest in the country. It moved to modern purpose-built accommodation in 1994. The centre has more urology input than any other spinal injuries centre.

The Urology team includes two Consultants, Mr Paul Tophill and Ms Sheilagh Reid, who are supported by specialist nurses. They deal with bladder, bowel, sexual and fertility function in patients with neurological disease, the continuing care of patients with congenital abnormalities of the bladder and associated rectal problems, insertion of artificial urinary sphincters for post-prostatectomy incontinence and some bladder reconstruction in neurologically-normal patients.

There are specialist clinics for transition, kidney stones, urogynaecology and, in addition, close working relationships with nephrology and renal transplantation.

Royal Hallamshire Hospital

Royal HallamshireThe female urology, reconstructive surgery & neuro-urology team has a dedicated session for video-urodynamics and ambulatory studies. It routinely performs minimally-invasive incontinence procedures, complex urogenital fistula surgery, urethroplasty (including complicated urethral reconstruction), bladder augmentation, urinary diversions and continent neobladder reconstructive procedures. Our endourology service provides shockwave lithotripsy, lasertripsy and percutaneous nephrological procedures to clear urinary tract calculi and upper tract neoplasia.

Our oncology service is a multidisciplinary group combining specialist urological cancer surgeons, radiologists, clinical oncologists, urological cancer nurses and palliative care teams for the management of most urological cancers. There is specific expertise for dealing with conventional & complex cancers of the kidney, bladder, prostate and testis. The team also provides advanced surgical expertise for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with complex or advanced pelvic cancer of gynaecological, large bowel and sarcomatous origin. There is close liaison with Weston Park Hospital which has a purpose-built Cancer Research Centre, one of only three dedicated cancer hospitals in the country.

The Academic Urology Unit was established in Sheffield in 1999 and has a dedicated team of specialists who undertake active research into prostate and bladder cancer, tissue engineering, BPH and dysfunctional bladder conditions, with local and international collaboration. It has been actively involved in urological research over the past 15 years and has raised £20 million of peer-reviewed research income. The faculty currently includes two senior academics, one NIHR-funded Clinical Lecturer and two academic clinical fellows. It is one of the largest academic urology units in the UK.
