PUJ Obstruction Audit

An audit of urological management of PUJ obstruction - launched 19 January 2011

Pelvi-ureteric junction obstruction is a relatively common condition of the upper urinary tract. It occurs when there is a narrowing of the upper part of the ureter just below the pelvis of the ureter itself. This leads to impedance in urine flow down the ureter. This can in turn lead to pain, loss of function and additional complications such as renal calculi.

Traditional management is surgical, a pyeloplasty. This was performed by traditional open surgery until 1993 when laparoscopic pyeloplasty was developed. There is also an option for other less commonly employed minimally invasive techniques and conservative (i.e. non-operative) management.

Laparoscopic pyeloplasty is a complex operation and the Section of Endourology feel it is important to gather information about this to assess the success rates of laparoscopic pyeloplasty and also to gather unique natural history information on the small number of patients who may be managed conservatively. It is also of course important to document adverse events and complications. This audit of both the conservative and surgical management of PUJ obstruction utilises the Clavien-Dindo classification of surgical complications and includes follow up of all patients at 6 and 12 months.

The PUJO audit was launched, on the BAUS Data and Audit System, in January 2011 and will run until the end of 2012 when data collection will close and all data will be analysed for presentation at the Section's 2013 meeting. As at March 2012, we have received 217 returns from 32 consultants and 28 centres, click here for a list of participating units and volumes.

A copy of the full dataset is available here, for information, but all returns must be made on line on the BAUS data and audit system. Members can also log into the Data and Audit System where there will be updates on the returns submitted.

Login to the Data and Audit System is separate from your login to the BAUS website. For the Nuvola System your username is the email address BAUS holds for you - if you have forgotten your password use the "Forgotten password" link and a new password will be sent to you.
