Trainees in FNUU

Dr H Hashim, SURG representative on FNUU Executive Committee.

The subspeciality of female, neurological and urodynamic urology (FNUU) has been gaining interest with many trainees in the past few years. However, unlike oncological urology and endourology, fellowships in this area have been scarce. Whilst two post-CCT fellowships were approved last year (2009), these will probably not be repeated again.

The only fellowship currently available is at Leicester General Hospital and is for six months. The fellowship offers training mainly in female urology, through an attachment with two urogynaecologists and two urologists. Four trainees have been through the fellowship with one currently being trained.

The aim is to produce urologists who are competent to operate vaginally on the pelvic floor. This includes training in repair of prolapse, fistulae, urethral diverticula and female and male incontinence.

The subsection of FNUU is becoming increasingly active in trying to set the standards and frameworks for training in the sub-speciality so, in the coming years, I hope we will see more of these fellowships arising.
