Riches Cystoscope

Riches Cystoscope, boxed (Leicester Collection)

The Riches' cystoscope was described by Sir Eric Riches in 1955 (see this paper in The Library).

It was an attempt to standardise cystoscopes in Great Britain, particularly the fittings and instruments used with them. Riches was President of BAUS from 1951 to 1953.

The Riches cystoscope could be used with biopsy forceps (see below), a lithotrite or a Kidd's diathermy ball (also below).

Riches Cystoscope - eye piece detail

This example from the Leicester Collection is in a sterilisation box. The three-way tap is in the lid, the light lead is in the box and the bottle contains spare bulbs.

Riches Cystoscope detail of catheterising lever (Leicester Collection)

This example has an Albarran-style lever for ureteric catheterisation.

The light bulb at the tip can be clearly seen.

The universal fitting allowed various other manipulating instruments to be used with the cystoscope.
