Phillips' Whips

Filiform bougies and followers

Philips' Whip fixed to a Dilator (Goddard Collection)

Described by Charles Joseph Phillips, the filiform whips are negotiated blindly through the stricture. If a single whip will not pass through the stricture, several whips are inserted at the same time of which one will usually pass the stricture (the "faggot" method).

Phillips' Urethral Dilators (Goddard Collection)
A graduated set of dilators, each with a thread on the end to fix to a whip. The dilators are screwed on to the whip and advanced through the stricture, increasing the size of the dilator until the required calibre has been reached.

Phillips' whips employed using the "faggot method". (In case you're wondering, it's from the French for a bundle of sticks!)
