BAUS ANNUAL MEETING 2008 ‡

Monday, 23 to Friday 27 June 2008
Manchester Central
Welcome from the President
On behalf of the Council of The British Association of Urological Surgeons,I am very pleased to welcome you to our Annual Meeting which is being held at Manchester Central from 23-27 June 2008.
Our theme for this year is ‘Shaping the Future of Urology’. The programme builds onthe success of BAUS 2007 and is themed to cover the breadth of urological practice. The BAUS Sections have put together a series of exciting and challenging plenary sessions which feature national and international opinion leaders in urology. A new feature this year are three ‘Challenge the Experts’ sessions at which you have the opportunity to submit cases to our panel of experts – further details are in the programme. Please do make the most of this opportunity.
On Monday our focus is Andrology with sessions on Peyronie’s Disease and Penile Cancer. On Tuesday the opening plenary is on Trauma and the theme for the day is Female and Reconstructive Urology. The Section of Endourology has put together an excellent programme on Wednesday which features Glenn Preminger (also a faculty member for the Teaching Course on Contemporary Management of Stone Disease). On Thursday the Section of Oncology has plenary sessions on non muscle invasive bladder cancer and NICE Prostate Cancer Guidance. We are delighted to welcome Peter Carroll to contribute to this programme. We conclude on Friday with a session on Translational Research (arranged by the Section of Academic Urology). If the topics on any one day are not your primary interest there are sub plenary sessions, three ‘open advice’ sessions and other presentations throughout the programme as well as an excellent programme of Teaching and Skills Courses produced by Kieran O’Flynn and the BAUS Sections.
Medical education, training and professional development have been in the spotlight in recent months – rarely for positive reasons. Our roles as doctors in the management and delivery of healthcare are being challenged continually. We must engage critically with this emerging agenda to safeguard and shape the future of medical professionalism in the UK. With this in mind we have put together a session on Thursday afternoon (Shaping the Future of Surgical Education and Training) which will explore some of these fundamental issues.
After the unqualified success of the Waverley Paddle Steamer in Glasgow, John Anderson had a major challenge on his hands to come up with a venue to rival it - and I am confident he has done just that. We will be enjoying an informal evening at the award winning Imperial War Museum North on Wednesday 25 June so put the date in your diary. Our accompanying persons are invited to meet for coffee at the Midland Hotel at 9.30 am on Tuesday 24 June to plan their week.
And now for some thank you’s... BAUS is very grateful for the generous support it receives for the Annual Meeting from the pharmaceutical and equipment industries. I know you will show your appreciation by visiting the stands in the Exhibition Hall during the course of the week. We are hosting a drinks reception in the Exhibition Hall on Tuesday 24 June at 6.00 pm which will provide an excellent opportunity to meet up with friends and to discuss your needs with the company representatives.
I would also like to thank all our Abstract Reviewers, the Programme Committee, the BAUS Section Chairmen and Committee Members, Kieran O’Flynn and, in particular, our Honorary Secretary, John Anderson, the staff in the BAUS Office and Bob Tolley (Oxford Motivation) for the enormous amount of work that has gone into planning this meeting.
We look forward to seeing you in Manchester.
