Summary & Timescale of the Data

General Information

  • The data collection periods were from 1 January 2012 to 31 December 2012 and 1 January 2013 to 31 December 2013.
  • Surgeons who returned data for 2012 but have stopped undertaking nephrectomies, and did not return any 2013 data, are not displayed.
     

Figures for England - 2012

5,449 procedures were recorded from 283 consultants at 119 centres, including 125 private patients from 34 consultants.

Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) for 2012 indicate that there were 7,178 nephrectomies undertaken by urologists in 2012, we captured data on 74% of the nephrectomies undertaken by urologists in England during 2012.

93.3% of the cases were entered by hand, as opposed to being bulk-uploaded from datasets such as Somerset Cancer Registry.

  • Median number of cases per consultant: 14 (range 1 – 107)
  • Median number of cases per centre: 37 (range 1 – 231)
     

Figures for England - 2013

6,941 procedures were recorded from 309 consultants at 124 centres, including 163 private patients from 45 consultants.

Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) for 2013 indicate that there were 7,478 nephrectomies undertaken by urologists in 2013, we captured data on 91% of the nephrectomies undertaken by urologists in England during 2013.

95% of the cases were entered by hand, as opposed to being bulk-uploaded from datasets such as Somerset Cancer Registry.

  • Median number of cases per consultant: 16 (range 1 – 118)
  • Median number of cases per centre: 39 (range 1 – 295)

19 Jun 2014 Second summary of data sent to Consultant contributors for validation
4 Jul 2014 Final deadline for corrections and additional data
Jun/Jul 2014 Data extracted from the web-based database. Once extracted, the data was transferred to a Microsoft Access™ database for validation before being imported into Tableau™ for generation of the analyses.
22 Sep 2014 All contributing surgeons were sent a link to the website so they could check exactly how their data would be presented.
