The Office of Education was established by BAUS in January 1997 in response to increasing demand by trainees and Urologists to have structured educational material delivered to them on a regular basis. Whilst the SAC in Urology, in association with the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB), sets the necessary standards to become a qualified urological surgeon in the UK and the Intercollegiate Board in Urology tests those standards through the FRCS(Urol) Examination, it is the aim of the Office of Education to ensure that adequate teaching is delivered to maintain these standards.
A number of on-going projects include:
For Trainees...
• An annual ‘Introduction to Urology Course’ to teach the basics of routine and emergency Urology and introduce trainees to methods of assessment encountered during training. It includes the introductory Ultrasound theory course, which is required prior to practical training.
• A bi-annual revision course for candidates taking the FRCS (Urol).
• Help and advice for FRCS(Urol) candidates to improve their performance.
• Development of materials to support in service self-assessment for trainees.
• Development of courses designed to support the developing changes in Urological Training.
For All Urologists...
• Organisation of educational symposia and courses at BAUS Annual Meetings.
• Organisation of Practical Skills courses at BAUS Annual Meetings.
• Production of CD-ROM to support Educational courses.
• Development of courses designed to support the increasing use of ultrasound by Urologists.
