Peter Camper

1722 - 1789

The first comparative anatomist

Peter Camper was born in Leyden and spent his working life in Holland.


As an illustrator, anthropologist, anatomist, physician and surgeon, he was one of the first scholars to study comparative anatomy. He is credited with having invented the word "extinct" in reference to animal species such as the mammoth.

He was Professor of Medicine in Amsterdam between 1750 and 1773.
