The National Consultant Information Programme (NCIP)
Click here for more news about the latest updates to the NCIP portal
NCIP is a data portal open to hospital consultant surgeons, clinical leads, medical directors and responsible officers, with the aim of providing greater visibility of consultant activity to reduce variation in outcomes, alongside identifying good practice to support clinical improvement and patient safety. More than 2000 hospital consultants across England are already using it.
As well as enabling surgeons to confidentially scrutinise and compare their performance, NCIP can also support with appraisal and revalidation, learning and development, leadership, tracking procedures, research and audit.
Urology was the first specialty to take part in a national rollout of NCIP. BAUS worked in partnership with NCIP to develop the urological data content and implement the specialty across English NHS Trusts. Vascular surgery, paediatric surgey (general, urology and orthopaedic) and orthopaedic surgey are now also online. Spinal, upper GI and lower GI surgery will follow in Spring 2024.
A new and improved version of the NCIP data portal was launched in October 2023, and is now availalbe via the Model Health System (MHS), allowing NCIP users to move seamlessly between the portal and MHS.
