Summary & Timescale of the Data

General Information

The three data collection periods were:

  • 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2017;
  • 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2018 and
  • 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2019.

Surgeons who returned data for 2017 and/or 2018, but have stopped undertaking nephrectomies and did not return any 2019 data, are not displayed individually but their figures will still be included in the relevant unit data. 

It is also important to note that as a result of the COVID-19 crisis some surgeons and units may have been unable to submit all or any of their 2019 data.

Timeline for 2019 data

May/Jun 2020 Data extracted from the web-based database. Once extracted, the data was transferred to a Microsoft Access™ database for validation before being imported into Tableau™ for generation of the analyses
Jun 2020 All contributing surgeons sent a link to the website so they could check exactly how their data would be presented
Jun/Jul 2020 Data live to public

2019 Figures for England

5,634 procedures were recorded from 220 consultants at 106 sites, including 160 private patients from 38 consultants. (Total from the UK for 2019 was 6,151) 

Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) for 2019 indicate that there were 7,165 nephrectomies undertaken by urologists in 2017. Therefore, we captured data on 79% of the nephrectomies undertaken by urologists in England during 2019. 

  • Median number of cases per consultant: 18 (range 1 - 138)
  • Median number of cases per centre: 30 (range 1 - 289)
 

2018 Figures for England

7,039 procedures were recorded from 272 consultants at 117 sites, including 239 private patients from 53 consultants. (Total from the UK for 2018 was 7,594) 

Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) for 2018 indicate that there were 8,043 nephrectomies undertaken by urologists in 2018. Therefore, we captured data on 88% of the nephrectomies undertaken by urologists in England during 2018. 

  • Median number of cases per consultant: 19 (range 1 - 167)
  • Median number of cases per centre: 41 (range 1 - 448)
 

2017 Figures for England

7,563 procedures were recorded from 286 consultants at 126 sites, including 248 private patients from 71 consultants. (Total from the UK for 2017 was 8,169) 

Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) for 2017 indicate that there were 8,117 nephrectomies undertaken by urologists in 2017. Therefore, we captured data on 93% of the nephrectomies undertaken by urologists in England during 2017. 

Median number of cases per consultant: 20 (range 1 - 144)

Median number of cases per centre: 39 (range 1 - 380)
