Spinal injuries urology course

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals

Spinal injuries urology course

This four-day course will give the candidate a comprehensive overview of neuro-urology.

Experts from neuro-urology centres across the UK will discuss pathophysiology, patterns of neurological disease and injury and their effects on bladder, bowel and sexual function.

We take a look at undertaking and interpreting complex video-urodynamics and making assessment of bladder safety with regards to intravesical pressures in relation to bladder management. We discuss the options for bladder management starting with containment devices, catheters, medications, intravesical treatments and surgical options including cystoplasty, Mitrofanoff, sphincterotomy, artificial urinary sphincters, bulking agents, autologous fascial slings, sacral neuromodulation and urinary diversion techniques.

The course also raises awareness of spinal complications such as pressure sores, spasms, peri-operative management and neuropathic stone disease. There are patient sessions included for candidates to meet and obtain real life understanding of patient journeys and also to experience wheelchair basketball.

Audience:
The course is aimed at senior urological trainees before their FRCS exam or urology consultants with a specialist interest in reconstructive and / or neuro-urology.
