Summary & Timescale of the Data

The 3-year data collection period was from 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2019.

5,152 cases were submitted in total, of which 4,833 were from England (1,846 from 2017, 1,717 from 2018 and 1270 from 2019); these 5,152 cases came from 154 consultants at 69 sites, and include 93 private patients from 31 consultants.

Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) for 2017, 2018 & 2019 indicate that there were 5,434 radical cystectomies undertaken in England during this time period (1913 in 2017 and 1,916 in 2018 & 1605 in 2019), so this audit collected data on 89% of the radical cystectomies undertaken in England during 2017 to 2019 (inclusive).

Of the total 5,152 cases reported 50.1% were open, 40.7% were robotic assisted, 4.2% laparoscopic and 4.9% Minimally invasive NOS.

It is also important to note that as a result of the COVID-19 crisis some surgeons and units may have been unable to submit all or any of their 2019 data.
