 Summary & Timescale of the Data

The 3-year data collection period was from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2018.

5,852 cases were submitted in total, of which 5,407 were from England (1,835 from 2016, 1,848 from 2017 and 1724from 2018); these 5,852 cases came from 159 consultants at 75 sites, and include 123 private patients from 37 consultants.

Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) for 2016, 2017 & 2018 indicate that there were 5,706 radical cystectomies undertaken in England during this time period (1,877 in 2016, 1913 in 2017 and 1,916 in 2018), so this audit collected data on 95% of the radical cystectomies undertaken in England during 2016 to 2018 (inclusive).

Of the total 5,852 cases reported 56% were open, 37% were robotic assisted, 4.8% laparoscopic and 2.2% Minimally invasive NOS.

Adverse events

The transfusion rate for open cases was 19.3%;  the transfusion rate for minimally invasive cases was 4.0%.

The overall 30-day mortality rate was 1.15% (67 out of 5852); the overall 90-day mortality rate was 1.95% (114 out of 5922).
