Summary & Timescale of the Data

The 3-year data collection period was from 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2017.

5,922 cases were submitted in total, of which 5,404 were from England (1,795 from 2015, 1,841 from 2016 and 1768 from 2017); these 5,922 cases came from 158 consultants at 75 sites, and include 133 private patients from 35 consultants.

Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) for 2015, 2016 & 2017 indicate that there were 5,742 radical cystectomies undertaken in England during this time period (1,952 in 2015, 1,877 in 2016 and 1,913 in 2017), so this audit collected data on 94% of the radical cystectomies undertaken in England during 2015 to 2017 (inclusive).

Of the total 5,922 cases reported 61% were open, 32% were robotic assisted, 5.4% laparoscopic, 1.7% Minimally invasive NOS and in 0.1% of cases the technique was not recorded.

Adverse events

The transfusion rate for open cases was 20.98%;  the transfusion rate for minimally invasive cases was 4.97%.

The overall 30-day mortality rate was 1.3% (77 out of 5922); the overall 90-day mortality rate was 2.2% (131 out of 5922).
