Trustees

The Trustees have legal and fiduciary responsibility for the Association. The Trustees of the charity include the Officers of the Association: The President, President Elect, Vice President Education, Vice President Membership, Deputy Vice President Education and Deputy Vice President Membership.

The Officers are elected by the voting members of the Association and, in total, each individual serves as a Trustee for four years. In addition, the Trustees have the power to co-opt up to four further Trustees, with the approval of Council.

Joe Philip (President)

Joe Philip is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Southmead Hospital, Bristol. He was appointed President-Elect in June 2024 and succeeded Ian Pearce as President in June 2026.


Mohammed Belal (President-Elect)

Mo Belal is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. He was appointed President-Elect in June 2026. Mo currently serves as Vice President Education until June 2027. He was previously Chair of the Section of FRU Executive Committee until December 2023.


Robert Calvert (Deputy Vice President Education)

Rob is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. He was elected as Deputy VP Education and automatically became a Trustee in June 2025. He will succeed Mo Belal as VP Education in June 2027


Muhammad Ahmad (Vice-President Membership)

Shabi Ahmad is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Sandwell District Hospital, West Bromwich.

He was appointed BAUS Honorary Treasurer Elect in June 2023 and is the current BAUS Vice President for Membership.


Suresh Venugopal (Deputy Vice President Membership)

Suresh is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Royal Liverpool Hospital. He was elected as Deouty VP Membership and was automatically appointed a Trustee in June 2025. He will succeed Shabi Ahmad as VP Membership in June 2027.


Tharani Nitkunan (Co-opted Member)

Tharani Nitkunan was co-opted to Trustees in January 2025.  Tharani is a Consultant Urologist at Epsom General Hospital, Surrey and is taking the lead on sustainability matters for BAUS.


Mo Sahu (Co-opted Member)

Mo Sahu was co-opted to Trustees in January 2025 and is the Trustee lead for Communications and Social Media. Mo is currently a Consultant Urologist at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust


Gareth Collett (Lay Member)

Gareth is a former British Army officer who rose to lead the UK’s bomb disposal profession, commanding some of the world’s most skilled teams against the evolving threat of explosive violence. Following service-related PTSD and bladder cancer, he became an academic researcher and charity advocate, championing the welfare of veterans and serving personnel.


Ian Gargan (Lay Member)

Ian contributes a rare combination of clinical background and executive leadership within complex health systems, bringing commercial, strategic and patient-centred insight at board level.

With his extensive background as a medical doctor and qualified psychologist, Dr Gargan brings a unique perspective to the table, combining medical expertise with a data-driven approach. This combination of skills has proven invaluable in leading organisations focused on improving patient outcomes in both public and private healthcare.Dr Gargan joined PHIN as Chief Executive in September 2022.


Ananda Guha (Lay Member)

Ananda spent three decades working as a diplomat and civil servant. Since leaving Government he has worked as a university lecturer and commercial mediator. Ananda was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2021. As a BAUS trustee, he wants to support the efforts of the urology profession to strengthen care quality and awareness.
