Functional & Reconstructive Urology

The Section was formed in 2003. Originally called the Section of Female and Reconstructive Urology, it was renamed in June 2009.,but has now returned to its original title. Its aim is to promote the highest standards in female urology in the United Kingdom.
The Section's main function is to set and raise standards by:
- producing guidelines, often in collaboration with other groups;
- promoting training and research; and
- organising clinical meetings.
Since 2009, the Section's annual meeting has been held immediately before the BAUS Annual Scientific Meeting each June.

Suzanne Biers (President)

Suzanne is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge and joined the team in 2017. Suzanne was elected as Vice Chair with effect from January 2025 and succeded to Chair from January 2026.
She is active in postgraduate medical teaching and is co-lead for the Anglia Ruskin University Urology Masters degree. As well as teaching, Suzanne is involved in local audit projects, a member of the Data and Ethics Monitoring Group for NIHR trial, and a sub-investigator on national trials. Her main clinical interests lie in the management of voiding dysfunction and incontinence in both men and women.

Ruth has a sub-specialist interest in female & reconstructive surgery, and has a major role in medical education. As well as being a mum, she admits to being a Netflix binge-watcher, a baker and a clubberciser. Ruth was elected to the BAUS FRU section committee as an executive member in December 2024.

Alison Downey (Elected Member)

Alison is a Consultant Urological Surgeon based in Wakefield, specializing in female, functional, and reconstructive urology.
She holds a Consultant post with the Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust (primarily Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield) and also works with the Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. She has also become a prominent national voice regarding the ketamine health crisis in the UK.
She was appointed to the committee in January 2026 for an initial 3-year term.

Alison is a Consultant Urological Surgeon based in Wakefield, specializing in female, functional, and reconstructive urology.

Mehwash is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Middlesbrough with specialist interest in female, functional and reconstructive urology and neurourology. She is the lead for the Sacral Neuromodulation and Complex UTI service.
With her passion for medical education, she holds the post of Urology Postgraduate Educational Lead as well as the CESR Lead for the Trust.
She participates in research, local and national audits and is a co-investigator on national trials. She was appointed as a member of the RCSEd Surgical Specialty Board for Urology in 2023. She joined the BAUS FRU section as an executive member in January 2024.

Mehwash is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Middlesbrough with specialist interest in female, functional and reconstructive urology and neurourology. She is the lead for the Sacral Neuromodulation and Complex UTI service.

Sanad Saad (Ex-officio: BSoT)

Sanad is a specialty trainee in Urology in the Yorkshire deanery. He was previously the BSoT Regional Representative for Yorkshire and Humber and was nominated as the best trainee in the region by his peers. He was elected as the BSoT Representative on the FNUU Executive Committee in September 2024.
Sanad's research interest lies in understanding the role of macrophages in biomaterial induced fibrosis which formed the basis of his PhD thesis. Clinically, Sanad is interested in functional and reconstructive urology, especially utilising minimally invasive techniques.
