Summary & Timescale of the Data

General Information

The three data collection periods were:

  • 1 January 2014 to 31 December 2014;
  • 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2015; and
  • 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2016.

Surgeons who returned data for 2014 and/or 2015, but have stopped undertaking nephrectomies and did not return any 2016 data, are not displayed individually but their figures will still be included in the relevant unit data. 

Timeline for 2016 data

7 Jul 2017 Final deadline for corrections and additional data
Aug 2017 Data extracted from the web-based database. Once extracted, the data was transferred to a Microsoft Access™ database for validation before being imported into Tableau™ for generation of the analyses
Sep 2017 All contributing surgeons sent a link to the website so they could check exactly how their data would be presented

2016 Figures for England

7,569 procedures were recorded from 300 consultants at 120 sites, including 303 private patients from 76 consultants.(total from the UK for 2016 was 8,052) 

Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) for 2016 indicate that there were 8,128 nephrectomies undertaken by urologists in 2016. Therefore, we captured data on 93% of the nephrectomies undertaken by urologists in England during 2016. 

  • Median number of cases per consultant: 17 (range 1 - 131)
  • Median number of cases per centre: 39 (range 1 - 315) 
 

2015 Figures for England

7,670 procedures were recorded from 301 consultants at 125 sites, including 294 private patients from 66 consultants.

(total from the UK for 2015 was 8,395) 

Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) for 2015 indicate that there were 8,190 nephrectomies undertaken by urologists in 2015. Therefore, we captured data on 94% of the nephrectomies undertaken by urologists in England during 2015. 

  • Median number of cases per consultant: 19 (range 1 - 142)
  • Median number of cases per centre: 41 (range 1 - 246) 
 

2014 Figures for England

7,540 procedures were recorded from 327 consultants at 125 sites, including 217 private patients from 58 consultants.

(total from the UK for 2014 was 8,238) 

Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) for 2014 indicate that there were 8,168 nephrectomies undertaken by urologists in 2014. Therefore, we captured data on 92% of the nephrectomies undertaken by urologists in England during 2014.

  • Median number of cases per consultant: 17 (range 1 – 131)
  • Median number of cases per centre: 38 (range 1 – 286)
