Ian Pearce, former BAUS President (2024 - 2026), Joe Philip, current BAUS President (2026 - 2028) and Mo Belal, President Elect (for 2028 - 2030) talk about their ambitions for the Association over the next five years within the BAUS Strategy for 2026 - 2031.
BAUS exists to advance the practice of urology and to improve outcomes for patients across the United Kingdom. As we set out our Strategy for 2026–2031, we do so at a time of both significant challenge and considerable opportunity for our specialty. Pressures on the NHS, rapid technological innovation, evolving workforce expectations, and rising patient demand require us to be clear in our purpose, focused in our priorities, and ambitious in our vision.
Over the past years, BAUS has demonstrated its ability to respond, to support its members, and to lead in the field of urology. This new strategy builds on that foundation. It reflects extensive engagement with our membership, partner organisations, and wider stakeholders, and it reaffirms BAUS’s role as the authoritative voice for urology in the UK.
Our strategic priorities for 2026–2031 are:
- Patient Care
- Membership
- Education and Research
- Policy and Advocacy
- Digital Transformation.
Across all of these, we place equity, quality, sustainability and patient-centred care at the heart of what we do. We will continue to champion high standards, promote evidence-based practice, and support the adoption of innovation that delivers real benefits in outcomes patient experience and sustainability.
The future of urology depends on a skilled, supported, and motivated workforce. BAUS is committed to supporting urologists at every stage of their career, from trainees and SAS doctors to consultants and retirees. We will strengthen our focus on wellbeing, professional development, leadership, and inclusivity, recognising that a diverse and resilient workforce is essential to delivering sustainable and equitable services.

We will strengthen our focus on wellbeing, professional development, leadership, and inclusivity, recognising that a diverse and resilient workforce is essential to delivering sustainable and equitable services. The British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) is the professional body representing urologists in the UK and internationally.
At the same time, we will reinforce our role as a strong advocate for urology at local, regional and national level. Through collaboration with policymakers, regulators, royal colleges, charities, and patient groups, BAUS will continue to raise the profile of urological conditions and the services required to reduce clinical backlogs and meet growing need. Our voice will be clear, evidenceinformed, and firmly focused on improving patient outcomes and member wellbeing.
This five year strategy sets out a clear commitment to recognising, supporting, and adding value for BAUS members at every stage of their professional lives. For members this means a stronger professional home that is more responsive to their needs and provides tangible value for money, and prioritises sustainability, wellbeing, inclusion, and engagement.
Members will benefit from improved access to high quality education and digital resources, greater support for career development across different pathways, a stronger national voice advocating on their behalf, and an increased emphasis on patient centred care aligned with professional standards. The strategy was developed by Trustees in response to a structured, multistage engagement process that embedded BAUS organisational insight and member voice. Through this strategy, BAUS aims to ensure that membership is not only relevant but actively supports members to deliver excellent urological care in an increasingly challenging and evolving healthcare environment.
This strategy is not an endpoint, but a framework for action. Its success depends on the collective efforts of our Trustees, staff, members, committees, external stakeholders and partners. Together, we will ensure that BAUS remains a forward looking, inclusive, and influential organisation, fit for the future and steadfast in its commitment to excellence in urological care and member success.
Monitoring, evaluation and impact will be integral to ensuring the Plan is delivered effectively, transparently, and in line with its intended outcomes. This will be assessed through measurement of improvements in member engagement, educational reach, policy influence and contribution to patient care.
We look forward to working with you to deliver this strategy and to shaping the next chapter of urology in the United Kingdom.
