BAUS Snapshot Audits

BAUS undertook two snapshot audits in 2020.

First, an audit of surgery for bladder outflow obstruction (BOO) with individual unit feedback sent out in early November 2020.  National data from the audit was presented at the BAUS 2020 Virtual Annual Scientific Meeting in November 2020, and can be found here.  Headline statements from this audit can also be found on the BOO Audit page (BAUS members only - requires login).

Second, an audit of the assessment and management of patients presenting with suspected or confirmed renal/ureteric colic with individual unit feedback sent out in mid-June 2021. National data from the audit was presented at the BAUS 2021 Virtual Annual Meeting in June 2021, and can be found here.


An audit of the management of the lower ureter in nephroureterectomy was launched in the summer of 2020, and closed on 31 December 2021.  The national data was reported at the BAUS Annual Scientific Meeting in June 2022 and can been found here.


Two further snapshot audits were launched in January 2022; management of muscle Invasive bladder cancer at transurethral resection of the bladder (MITRE) and emergency ureteric injury management (REJOIN).  National data for MITRE was reported at the BAUS Annual Scientific Meeting in June 2022 and can be found here.  The preliminary results of the REJOIN audit were presented at the BAUS Annual Scientific Meeting in June 2023.


A national audit of patient satisfaction with cystectomy pathway for bladder cancer (PROM) was launched in mid-November 2022.  This audit is was a collaboration between BAUS and the patient charity Action Bladder Cancer UK (ABCUK).  It was the first national audit focused entirely on patients' perceptions of the quaility of care received on their cystectomy pathway.  It was also the first such collaboration with a patient charity and represents an exciting evolution for BAUS audit and quality improvement.  The preliminary results were presented at the BAUS Annual Scientific Meeting in June 2023 and the national summary report can be seen here.


The BAUS nephrostomy audit launched in Sepetmber 2023.  The audit will collect data on the management and outcomes of patients undergoing primary insertion of nephrostomy for an infected, obstructed, kidney in the emergency setting and identify variation in the nephrostomy pathway and its effect on the patient outcome.  Data for this audit will be collected on all patients undergoing insertion of an emergency nephrostomy for an infected, obstructed kidney between 1 October 2023 & 30 November 2023.  Data submission will take place between 1 February 2024 and 28 February 2024.  The aims and audit methodology can be seen here.  Preliminary results from the audit will be presented at the BAUS Annual Scientific Meeting in June 2024.


The BAUS Impact of Diagnostic Ureteroscopy on Radical Nephroureterectomy and Compliance with Standard Care Practices (I-DUNC) Audit launched in early 2024.  The audit will collect data on all patients undergoing Radical Nephroureterectomy for suspected Upper Tract Urothelial Cancer between 1 July 2022 and 31 July 2023, and subsequent follow-up data including the number of patients who had post-Radical Nephroureterectomy bladder Mitomycin-C and the number of patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy for T2 or higher disease.  Data submission will take place between 1 April and 31 April inclusive.  The aims and audit methodology can be seen here.  Preliminary results from the audit will be presented at the BAUS Annual Scientific Meeting in June 2024.


The BAUS Penile Fracture (SNAP) Audit will take place during FY 2024/25.  Data for this audit will be collected on all patients undergoing a surgical repair for a suspected or confirmed penile fracture between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2022.  The aims and audit methodology can be seen here.


The BAUS Envioronmental Lessons Learned and Applied (ELLA) Audit will take place during FY 2024/25.  Data submission will take place in Autumn 2024 (data submission period yet to be confirmed).  The aims and audit methodology can be seen here.
