Summary of the video clips
Urological conditions make up around 30% of all GP and hospital referrals with urologists working alongside other specialists to treat patients. Presented by ITN Productions Industry News presenter Michael Underwood, "Futurology" highlights the work and procedures being carried out by urologists, and the new approaches being made by the medical profession in response to the rise in urological conditions. The unique collaboration features interviews with BAUS representatives and others working in the sector, with edifying news items on the medical market-leaders who work to improve efficiencies.
This year marks the 75th Anniversary of The British Association of Urological Surgeons. President of the Association, Tim O’Brien, discusses how far the specialty has come in patient care with the advent of new and existing technologies, from fibre-optics to imaging precision. And also, how urological professionals educate, develop and support each other which, he hopes, will encourage medical students to consider the breadth of urological specialities when choosing their careers.
Urological conditions make up one quarter of all surgical referrals to hospitals, with urology making up one tenth of GP consultations, and the number of urological referrals is increasing. ITN Productions Industry News presenter Robin Ross reports on the opportunities in urology for medical students considering a career in surgery.
Urological complaints affect both men and women; interstitial cystitis or painful bladder syndrome is one such debilitating bladder condition. ITN Productions Industry News presenter Sharon Thomas reports from Aspire Pharma, distributors of an innovative market-leading treatment that can be self-administered at home making treatment more manageable, particularly in light of the current pandemic restrictions.
The work of The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust’s clinical nurse specialists adds huge value to the treatment of urological patients. ITN Productions Industry News reporter Selina Downes will explore how the Trust’s effective succession planning, focussed on forging and advancing nursing careers for the roles, is vital to maintain and develop long-term treatment plans and future services.
‘Futurology’ will also look at the work of the national charity Bladder Health UK, which offers invaluable help and support to the many people who suffer from bladder problems. BHUK works to ensure that sufferers have someone to talk to via their advice line, or virtually, to share experiences and hear more about treatments that can improve their quality of life.
The Urolift treatment system presented by Teleflex gives rapid relief and recovery of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) symptoms. It is the only BPH treatment performed by a urologist that does not require heating, cutting, or removal of the prostate tissue. The procedure is typically performed using local anesthesia in a physician’s office or ambulatory surgery centre rather than in a surgical environment. Patients can return home the same day without a catheter.
The programme launched at BAUS Virtual Annual Scientific Meeting on 11 November 2020 and will be supported by a campaign targeting BAUS membership and beyond.
Tim O'Brien, President of the British Association of Urological Surgeons said:
" ... We want to attract the brightest and best to urology. It’s a wonderful broad specialty and these films set out the incredible advances that have been made, are being made and need to be made. Take a look at urology ... "
Elizabeth Fisher-Robins, Head of ITN Productions Industry News said:
" ... We are delighted to partner with BAUS to make a programme that raises awareness and understanding of urological professionals, and the great work that is being done to improve excellence in urological care. We hope the programme demonstrates the diversity in urological sub-specialties, and encourages the next generation of urology professionals ... "
