Chevassu Medal

French Urologist with an interest in testicular cancer

Maurice-Auguste Chevassu was born on 28 October 1877 in Lons-le-Saunier, France.

From 1919 to 1933, he was the Director of the surgical clinic at Hôpital Cochin in Paris. In 1933, he was appointed Professor of Surgical Pathology and, later, Professor of Clinical Urology at Hôpital Necker, where he succeeded Georges Marion (1869-1960).

In 1906, he published "Tumeurs du Testicul" (tumours of the testis) in which he provides a thorough categorisation of testicular cancers. He advocated removal of the testis with its vascular stem, followed by complete removal of associated lymph nodes.

A specialized ureteric catheter known as a "Chevassu catheter" is named after him; it is used for retrograde ureteropyelography.
