Correctly known as The Decoration for Officers of the Royal Naval Reserve, but more commonly known as the Reserve Decoration, this medal was awarded to officers with at least fifteen years service in the Royal Naval Reserve. They were allowed to put the letters RD after their name. Service as a midshipman did not count towards the fifteen year but war service counted as double.
The cypher of the monarch, in this case Queen Elizabeth II is surrounded by a silver cable tied with a reef knot with the crown above. The medal was first awarded in 1908 and was replaced by the combined Volunteer Reverves Medal in 1999.
This particular medal was awarded to Peter Thompson, former consultant urologist to Kings College Hospital, London and former Surgeon Lieutenant Comander in the Royal Navy.
