M.B.E.

Member of the Order of the British Empire

Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding valuable service. It was established by King George V on 4th June 1917 initially to recognise the many individuals who had given service during the First World War, but not in combat.

From its inception it could be awarded to both men and women and also for foreign recipients. MBE is one of five classes within the order, which also includes, GBE, KBE or DBE, CBE, and OBE.

This medal was awarded to Ms Jyoti Shah, Consultant Urologist, who kindly provided the images for the museum. She was honoured for her services to medicine and work in the screening and diagnosis of cancer patients in the community in the 2023 King’s New Years Honours list receiving her medal from King Charles III in January 2024.

Other urologists who have been awarded an MBE include:

Professor Francis (Frank) Chinegwundoh in 2013 for his services to the NHS and urology.

Mrs Alice Hartley in the 2024 for her campaigning work to tackle bullying and improve workplace behaviour in surgery.

Mr Gurpreet Singh in the 2020 Queen's Birthday Honours for services to healthcare, equality, and diversity.

Mr Peter Duffy in 2020 for volunteering to cover hospital wards, sit with dying patients, and provide bedside care during the COVID-19.

 

Medals before 1937 had an image of Britania, after that date, this was replaced by an image of George V and Queen Mary.
