Professor Paul Abel

1952 - 2023

Obituary by Stephen Mitchell, Consultant Urological Surgeon

It was with great sadness that BAUS learnt of of the sudden death from COVID of Paul Abel, former Professor & Consultant Urological Surgeon at Imperial College, London.

Paul was a visionary academic urologist who trained in Liverpool prior to taking up a Consultant post at Ealing Hospital and then at Imperial College Healthcare.

He was a pivotal figure in supporting many trainees through higher degrees. He was unfailingly supportive, brought out the best in everyone and was never afraid to challenge prevailing views in the interests of patient care. He was a very popular colleague and supervisor. Sadly, his latter years were marred by progressive Parkinson’s disease.

He leaves a widow, Ruth, and three sons Jacob, Isaac and Mark as well as a daughter, Vanessa.
