Hugh Hampton Young

1870 - 1945

Radical prostatectomist & "father of American urology"

Hugh Hampton Young (1870 - 1945) is considered to be the "Father of American Urology." He was born in San Antonio, Texas in 1870.


He attended the University of Virginia where he gained bachelors, masters and medical degrees. He moved to Johns Hopkins Hospital for his postgraduate education and, in 1897, three years after graduating from medical school, Halsted, the chief of surgery, asked Young to take charge of the Genitourinary Surgery Division.

Young developed many new instruments and techniques including the prostatic punch. He is also credited with the first radical prostatectomy in 1904.
