The Mayo Brothers (USA)

The Stamp

This stamp was issued by the US Postal Service on 11 September 1964, the centennial year of the Mayo Clinic.

The green colour is traditionally associated with medicine and as well as the portrait of the Mayo brothers, adapted from a statue by James Earle Fraser, it features the staff of Aesculapius, the Greco-Roman god of medicine.

The Doctors

William James Mayo (1861-1939) and Charles Horace Mayo (1865 -1939) were the sons of American physician, William Worrall Mayo. Joined by his sons, William Worrall's practice eventually became the world-renowned Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
