Civiale Lithotrite

With lockable jaws

This is a French type lithotrite, probably one of the later designs of Jean Civiale because it incorporates the Charrière split nut.

This allowed the user to lock the jaws of the lithotrite quickly once the stone had been grasped.

From the Leicester collection, it dates from the second half of the 19th century.
