Although we often think of military medals on the chests of veterans from the two World Wars of the twentieth century, it is important if sad to remember that war is not an historical phenomenon, but continued into the twenty first century and sadly is still around us now.

These service medals were awarded to Duncan Summerton, President of BAUS 2018 - 2020, who served in the Royal Navy from 1985 to 2004, retiring with the rank of Surgeon Commander.
The first is the Operational Service Medal with Afghanistan Clasp for Operation Veritas, 2001.
The second is the Iraq Medal with clasp for those serving in Zone One between 19th March and 28th April 2003, the initial combat operation.
The third is the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal. Created in 2002 to mark the 50th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's accession in 1952. It was awarded to active personnel in the British Armed Forces.
